Access Network in the 2019 PERC Proceedings

February 17, 2020 @ginaquan 0

Several members of Access recently had a paper and poster accepted to the 2019 proceedings of the Physics Education Research Conference (PERC). PERC is an annual conference attached to the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Summer Meeting. Our paper gives an overview of the Access Network and shares some evidence that Access activities are supporting some of our goals. We are grateful for the members of Access who were willing to share their experiences Read More

GPS Student-Leaders Co-Author letter to Editor

February 6, 2018 @ginaquan 0

Brianne Gutmann and Gloria Lee, student-leaders in Guidance for Physics Students (GPS) at UIUC, recently co-authored a letter to the Editor in Nature about graduate student mental health. They point out that recent discussions of mental health in graduate school have focused on student coping mechanisms, rather than addressing systemic features of academia that negatively impact mental health. During the SACNAS conference, many opportunities arose for summer internships and research. As a first year, the conference was very motivating and eye-opening to the opportunities available. Being exposed to the many opportunities, it helped frame a potential path for my upcoming summers. I was able to network throughout the conference, and I made connections that may be very beneficial for my future. Furthermore, I was able to gain mentorship regarding successful interview skills. Attending the SACNAS conference was a wonderful experience professionally and academically. I had the opportunity to present research I did this past summer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. While presenting this research project, I practiced my science communication skills and met professors and researchers who were interested in learning more about my interests and future goals. I even got the “best poster presentation award” in physics/astronomy for the second time! The professors I met ranged Read More

Prior to attending SACNAS I had many doubts on if pursuing a STEM field was still right for me. There is a huge lack of diversity in STEM Majors at UC Berkeley, so it was very easy for me to feel alone and isolated. Being able to attend SACNAS completely turned me around and helped me push the feelings and negative thoughts of Imposter Syndrome out of my head. At SACNAS, I was able to Read More

SACNAS 2017 has by far been one of the best college experiences I’ve ever had. It was my first science conference, and I gained much more than I ever expected I would. Throughout my time here, I have heard personal stories from entrepreneurs, scientists, and academics that were truly inspiring. One of the most touching stories was hearing about Tyrone Hayes, who successfully proved that exposure to atrazine did in fact have adverse health effects, Read More

I attended the 2017 SACNAS National Diversity in STEM conference for the first time thanks to funding from the Access Network, and I had an amazing experience! I met many graduate school recruiters who were eager to have me in their programs, and they gave me advice in order to be a competitive applicant. All the attention towards me as a graduating senior made me feel special and it boosted my confidence about applying to Read More
